Black Jack – also referred to as ‘21′ and ‘pontoon’ – is a game that is commonly found in a casino with players attempting their fortune on achieving the elusive ‘twenty one’. It is commonly believed that the game came into existence in France amid the 17th century. However, as with many other betting games the exact evolution of the game is a mystery.
Twenty-one was brought to the States after the French Revolution, but the game did not become popular in the betting houses until the house provided payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that seemed to get people gambling on blackjack. One variant on the bonus payment was for a gambler to make ‘twenty one’ with the blackjack card (valued at ten points) and an ace (valued at 11 points). With the growing popularity of the game the pay outs were phased out but the name ‘pontoon’ remained.
Black jack is not simply about acquiring an immediate ‘twenty one’, but the main challenge is to defeat the croupier without going ‘bust’. The betting house obviously has an advantage over the chemin de fer players in the long run, but with pontoon the player holds on to a bit of choice.
Since nineteen thirty one when the U.S. first approved betting, black jack has developed into a classic betting house game. Furthermore, it’s the combination of both ability and math used in chemin de fer that has caused the game to be massively popular. Twenty-one gives an attractive adventure to any academic, math guy or wagering player wanting to research the tactic of the game.
